Prosecutors on Friday demanded a 12-year prison term for land developer Kim Man-bae, a key figure in the "Daejang-dong development scandal" that occurred in Seongnam, just south of Seoul, a decade ago, during a court hearing.
Prosecutors also requested a seven-year imprisonment and a fine of 1.7 billion won ($1.25 million) for Yoo Dong-gyu, another key figure who served as acting president of Seongnam Development Corp., during the hearing at the Seoul Central District Court.
The prosecution asked the court to impose a forfeit of 611.2 billion won on Kim and a forfeit of 850 million won on Yoo.
The scandal centers on allegations that a small number of private asset management companies, including Hwacheon Daeyu owned by Kim, were allowed to reap significant investment profits from the real estate development project in Seongnam's Daejang-dong district in 2015, when President Lee Jae Myung was the city's mayor.
Kim and other developers were indicted for causing a loss of 489.5 billion won to Seongnam Development Corp. Lee separately stood trial on charges of involvement in the scandal.

검찰은 또한 김에게 6112억 원의 몰수와 유에게는 8억5000만 원의 몰수를 명령해줄 것을 법원에 요청했다. 이 스캔들은 2015년 이재명 전 성남시장이 시장으로 재직하던 시기에 김이 소유한 화천대유 등 일부의 비상장 자산 관리 회사들이 성남 대장동 지역의 부동산 개발 프로젝트에서 천문학적인 투자 수익을 올렸다는 혐의를 중심으로 진행되고 있다.
김과 다른 개발자들은 성남도시개발공사에 4895억 원의 손실을 초래한 혐의로 기소되었다.
