A Seoul court is set to conduct the first preparatory hearing for former President Moon Jae-in's bribery trial next month, according to legal sources.
Moon was indicted last month on accusations of receiving bribes exceeding 200 million won ($146,537) in the form of a salary and other payments for his son-in-law, surnamed Seo, from the Thailand-based budget airline Thai Eastar Jet.
The preparatory hearing is scheduled for 2 p.m. on June 17 at the Seoul Central District Court. Seo was appointed as executive director at the airline in 2018, following the appointment of the company's founder, a former two-term lawmaker, as head of the Korea SMEs and Startups Agency.
Prosecutors allege that the appointment of Seo was made in exchange for the founder's position, noting Seo's lack of experience in the airline industry at the time.
During a preliminary hearing, the court typically verifies the defendant's position and outlines plans for future proceedings. Unlike the main trial, attendance by the defendant is not mandatory.

예비 심리에서는 법원이 일반적으로 피고의 입장과 향후 절차에 대한 계획을 확인한다. 본 재판과는 달리 피고는 출석이 의무는 아니다.
