A hillside is left scorched by a massive wildfire in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province, on Saturday.
Police have begun investigating a 56-year-old man on suspicion of igniting wildfires that plagued southeastern Korea over the past ten days, resulting in 30 fatalities and extensive damage to land.
The suspect allegedly started the fire at around 11:24 a.m. on March 22 while conducting an ancestral rite at a family grave on a hill in Uiseong, North Gyeongsang Province. He is accused of violating the Forest Protection Act.
According to police, the flames rapidly spread from Uiseong to surrounding areas, including Andong, Cheongsong, Yeongyang, and Yeongdeok. The wildfire has been recorded as the most destructive in the nation's history.
The suspect has denied the allegations against him, as confirmed by police reports. At the time the fire ignited, the suspect's daughter contacted the 119 fire service, stating, “A fire broke out, and my great-grandfather’s grave is burning.” Police later verified that the suspect's wife was also present at the scene.
During preliminary questioning, the daughter explained that they had attempted to remove a tree branch from the burial site. After being unable to break it, they used a lighter to burn the branch, but the wind carried the embers, which ultimately ignited the wildfire.
The police plan to conduct a joint forensic investigation this week in collaboration with the National Institute of Forest Science, the National Forensic Service, and fire authorities to ascertain the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the blaze.
As reported by the Korea Forest Service, the primary blaze of the wildfires was extinguished around 1 p.m. on Sunday, 213 hours and 34 minutes after it started. Despite this progress, firefighters continued to address flare-ups in multiple areas. On Saturday, wildfires reignited in Andong and Uiseong, and another fire was reported in Cheongsong early on Sunday around 3:12 a.m., prompting evacuations of nearby residents.
The wildfires have burned approximately 48,238 hectares, an area comparable to 80 percent of the capital, Seoul. The disaster has resulted in at least 30 deaths and 45 injuries. Furthermore, this incident marks the second-longest wildfire recorded since official records began in 1986, with the longest occurring on March 4, 2022, in Uljin, North Gyeongsang Province, which lasted 213 hours and 43 minutes before being fully extinguished.

토요일에는 안동과 의성에서 산불이 다시 발생했으며, 일요일 이른 아침 3시 12분경 청송에서도 다시 불이 붙어 인근 주민들이 대피해야 했다.
이 산불은 한국 역사상 가장 파괴적인 기록으로 남았으며, 약 48,238헥타르를 태워 약 80%의 서울 면적에 해당하는 영역이 소실되었다. 이 재난으로 최소 30명이 사망하고 45명이 부상을 입었다.
이번 산불은 KFS가 공식 기록을 시작한 1986년 이후 두 번째로 긴 산불로 기록되었다.
가장 긴 산불은 2022년 3월 4일 경북 울진에서 발생하여 강원도 삼척으로 퍼져 나갔으며, 10일 후 213시간 43분 만에 완전히 진화되었다.
